Run Awhile—Kristina Gehman (2010)
Dec 15th, 2010 | By BennettRabiega | Category: ReviewsEvery journey has to start somewhere. On her debut CD, entitled Run Awhile, Kristina Gehman takes the first steps on her artistic journey. And, with the guidance of Lancaster County music veteran Steven Courtney, they are strong steps. She is exploring (for the most part) a type of Memphis-influenced R&B style that, I think, suits her voice.
Kristina’s voice is warm and tuneful, and she seems quite confident in her ability to accept and deliver on the challenges of the material. Whether it is the sass of “Oh Honey, What’s Your Name?” or the gentle urging of “Should Have Been Yesterday,” it is her expressive voice that unifies this recording and makes it a rewarding listen.
The originals on the album are by Gehman and Courtney and for the most part are strong. Standout tracks include the aforementioned “Should Have Been Yesterday,” the cantina bop “Why?” and the joyful fatalism of “Nothing Left to Lose.” However, I think my favorite thing on here might just be Kristina’s take on Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird.” This is a gutsy cover choice, since Christine McVie’s version from “Rumours” is a signature rendition that is uniquely identified with her. But between the excellent arrangement and her sensitive vocal performance, Kristina has put her own (impressive) stamp on this great song.
There is a lot to like on this CD, but I really look forward to where she goes from here as she matures as a vocalist and, especially, as a songwriter. If her future steps are as enjoyable as these first ones, I am looking following her on that journey.
